The
Center of Science, Leadership, and Culture (CCLC for its Spanish
acronym) offers diverse topics to help you in your professional
development, whether you are an experienced professional or recently
entering school. CCLC conducts workshops to help you become an
effective leader, participate from cultural activities, perform fun
hands-on science and engineering experiments, and much more. These are
embedded in the idea of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts,
and math) education. The topics that CCLC covers are found in
professional settings, such as, conferences, workplace, universities,
among others; which not all of us have the opportunity to attend. CCLC
wants to contribute to bridge the gap by bringing that information and
making it available to the general public.

Herbert
Herbert Silva currently works at JSC NASA in the Structural Engineering, Loads and Dynamics Branch. He is also the Communications Chair for the Human Systems Integration (HSI) employee resource group. Prior to joining NASA, Herbert completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, where he worked at the Experimental Mechanics Lab and at the SLAC National Linear Accelerator where he used X-ray diffraction to determine mechanical properties of biological tissues by mapping the presence of bio-minerals, cholesterol crystals and collagen fibrils as well as their orientation and size.
He has embarked in community service and international travel, where using his engineering skills sought to work in projects that aimed to provide communities with the basic resources to improve the quality of life while also promoting communities self-leadership: Argentina (Stanford – Global Engineering Programs), China (Stanford – Global Engineering Program Bridge to China), Mozambique (Stanford – Extreme Design for Affordability), Guatemala (Engineers without Borders), Mexico (Rutgers University - Study Abroad). Throughout these projects Herbert dealt not only with real technical aspects of engineering alongside professional engineers, but also with the social, political, economic, and cultural constraints involved in successfully implementing an engineering project. This extraordinary opportunity taught him that the world’s problems are vast, but if we combine forces and overcome our differences, great things can be accomplished. |
Victor
Born in New York, graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Victor currently works at the Boeing Company, as a Systems Engineer for the CST-100 Starliner crew capsule. Prior to this, he worked at United Technologies Aerospace Systems as Development Engineering Operations Electrical Lead. His contributions included leading the transition from design to production of full authority digital electronic controls for the F35 Short Take-off and Vertical Landing Joint Strike Fighter program. He drives high risk items to completion within outlined budgets and meeting program review deadlines. Something that is hard to do on military programs is to keep track of projections and Victor managed to overcome those issues with solid recovery plans and testability fault isolation activities, which helped the program and his Electronics team to achieve successful standards.
In the mist of this challenging job, Victor continued his contribution to the Latino community, something he started as a college student as part of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. He is very involved in K-12 and universities school outreach activities, with the purpose of getting students interested in science and engineering. Victor also serves as a mentor for recent hires at his company, undergraduate college students, and high school students from the tri-state area in the United States. Victor loves spending time with his kids, and playing basketball. He is a role model for future and current professionals, who although have a demanding job and a family, he can still give time to students who are the future of this society. |
